Finding DRM-free EPUBs

What DRM-free means, how to check a book's format, and how to bring your own EPUB library to PageFlick.

Books beside a warm reading light

PageFlick reads DRM-free EPUB files you already own. It does not include a book store, and a book in another reading app is not always a file you can import.

Before buying or downloading a title, check both its format and its copy protection.

Look for EPUB and DRM-free

EPUB is a digital book format. Its text can flow to fit different screen sizes and font settings, which makes it useful for reading on a phone or tablet.

DRM is a form of copy protection. Some stores tie a purchased book to their own app or account. PageFlick cannot open those protected books.

A listing that says “ebook” is not enough. Look for an explicit EPUB download and a statement that it is DRM-free. If the seller does not say, ask before purchasing.

Public-domain books

Public-domain collections can be a useful place to start. Choose an EPUB download rather than a PDF, an online reading link, or a format intended for another device.

Two places to find free books are:

  • Standard Ebooks publishes carefully proofread and formatted editions of public-domain books. On a book’s download page, choose the compatible EPUB file and save it to Files for importing into PageFlick.
  • Project Gutenberg offers free ebooks, with a focus on older works whose U.S. copyright has expired. Open a book’s page and choose an EPUB download to save a copy for your library.

Copyright rules vary by country. Check the collection’s terms and the copyright status that applies where you live before downloading a book.

Books bought directly from publishers

Some authors and publishers sell DRM-free EPUBs directly. Their download page should explain the available formats and any restrictions on use.

Keep the original file somewhere you can find again. A folder in Files or iCloud Drive makes importing a book easier later.

Import into PageFlick

In the current beta, choose a DRM-free EPUB using the app’s import control and the system file picker. You can also open an EPUB with PageFlick through the system’s Open With menu.

A file ending in .epub can still be protected. If it will not open, check the seller’s download instructions and confirm that it is DRM-free. Renaming a file does not change its format or remove copy protection.
